Intriguing
pair of rectangular bowls or dishes by Grays Pottery. They are both
slightly differently coloured, one a slightly brighter yellowish buff.
The backstamps date from the mid 1930s but there are handwritten marks,
too "D2 x 36" & "D2 x 37" and these appear to have been lacquered
over. I suspect they may be colour test pieces of some kind, something I
am accustomed to finding as I live near The Potteries and much of my
stock is sourced from the area. Perhaps they were to be hand coloured
later or maybe they were trialling different base colours. We'll never
know. They're in excellent condition and are lovely and smooth. Still
fantastic pieces in their own right.
