Small Wood Effect Bowl or Planter - Vitry Ware

SOLD

Small Vitry Ware planter or bowl (dog's bowl?) in wood effect finish, in much the same fashion as that used by Moira for the Hillstonia range. I am unsure of the date - many have put these as 1930s but the backstamp is slightly different so I am guessing this one is later. Apart from the water stain on the inside it's in fine condition.

Large Vintage Leaves Jug/Sauce Boat - Royal Doulton

Vintage Royal Doulton jug or sauce boat. I think it dates from the late 1930s but I have not yet been able to find a name for the pattern, which is russet coloured leaves over a curlicue background on a cream base. The handle is stepped on the underside of the top join. The mark is the standard post 1932 one with 13 either side of the crown and a Q underneath. Decorator's mark, D5921. Condition is good althought there are some slight rough edges and a couple of tiny cracks around the rim and the pattern appears worn in a couple of places. The foot ring is ingrained with dust.

Vintage Art Deco Burleigh Ware Bowl - Burgess & Leigh

This is a fairly large mottled green Burleigh Ware bowl with the "hive and leaves" backstamp dating it to the 1930s. It is a beautiful shape and is free from nicks, cracks and chips. The only fault is with the glaze, which seems to have run and pooled in the bottom somewhat and is uneven on one side of the pedestal part, prompting me to think this is possibly a production second. I live near The Potteries and I see a lot of perfectly good items with small glazing faults - just enough to keep them from general sale, factory second shop or export and it is reasonable to surmise they may have been passed on to pot bank workers in lieu of being scrapped. A little bit of social history perhaps? It is nevertheless still a smart looking bowl.

Vintage 1930s Fish Shaped Sauce Boat - Shorter & Sons

SOLD

Brilliant fishware sauce boat from Shorter & Son and if the backstamp is correct, from between 1933 & 1940. Handpainted in aquamarine tinged with purple and yellow, with reddish lips and black and yellow eyes. It's in excellent condition, with no crazing, although it has to be said the eyes haven't been done too well, especially the right one! Unfortunately there's no matching saucer. Fantastic item though and would make a great addition to you fishware collection or could stand alone as a posy vase.

The Book of Hints and Wrinkles - 1939 - Odhams and How to Write, Speak and Think Correctly - 1939 - Odhams

Part of a series of self-help books from Odhams Press published in the late 1930s, this one is self-explanatory to be fair although the section on thinking correctly is intriguing. Hardback with original dust jacket, which is actually in exceptional condition. A bit dusty with a touch of foxing but generally in very good condition.
