The Uganda Cookery Book - 1925

SOLD

Lovely old cookery book published for the Ugandan colonials in 1925 by the Sheldon Press and sold through the Uganda Bookshop, Kampala. It is "The Uganda Cookery Book" or "Ekitabo Ekyokufumba" and contains 142 recipes in English with translation in Lugandan. They don't appear to be particularly local recipes, being rather familiar British or other colonially sourced recipes. For instance, while many of the recipes here call for cheese there is no Lugandan word for it and I can't imagine why there should be as I'm not sure cheese is particularly common in overtly hot countries. It makes for great reading! In addition it appears to have been used as a family cookbook and there are several cuttings stuck in it and also plenty of handwritten recipes on the notes pages. Some of these appear to be wartime ones as they reference the ration and one for chocolate is even written on the back of an ARP Warden's report form. Fascinating book and in very good condition considering its age and obvious well used history. Surprisingly little bumping and all stitching and bindings sound.

Vintage UK Commander Film Copying Sheets Carbon Paper

This is an almost complete box of 200 Commander Film Copying Sheets, or more familiarly, carbon paper. They are 8" x 5" sheets, which is just slightly smaller than A5 and are all unused bar about half a dozen. These are also in the box and on close examination the typed date of January 1967 can be made out, which would assume a manufacturing date of 1966 at least. The sheets are all in pretty good condition although a few have some crystal deposits on them, which is not surprising given their age. The box is in excellent condition.

The Book of Hints and Wrinkles - 1939 - Odhams and How to Write, Speak and Think Correctly - 1939 - Odhams

Part of a series of self-help books from Odhams Press published in the late 1930s, this one is self-explanatory to be fair although the section on thinking correctly is intriguing. Hardback with original dust jacket, which is actually in exceptional condition. A bit dusty with a touch of foxing but generally in very good condition.

1941 Map of Switzerland: Sustenpass. Eidg. Landestopographie Bern

Topographischer Atlas der Schweiz - Topographic map of Switzerland from Eidg. Landestopographie Bern. 1:50,000 centred on the Sustenpass. It's 1941 edition and I have to admit there's a certain mustiness about it that suggests it's of an age although it's in excellent condition apart from a single perforation on one of the fold points. The folded size is 20cm x 13.5, open 80cm x 95cm.

Glut Book - How to Cope With Your Surplus Produce - Kathleen Thomas - 1961

Written by Kathleen Turner and compiled from recipes sent in presumably the readers of Farmers' Weekly, this is a Farm Woman's Library Book published by Longacre Press in 1961 and is specifically aimed at dealing with "too much of anything". Fascinating and very much of its time, the most exotic ingredients I can see are a teaspoon of paprika and the occasional clove of garlic. Lots of recipes for pigeons!

Lady Penelope Annual 1968 - Century 21 Publishing

Published in 1968 for 1969 by the late and very much lamented Gerry Anderson's Century 21 Publishing, this includes strips featuring lady Penelope and Parker, The Monkees and others. There are also plenty of articles on the popular beat combos of the day and stories about gels doing spiffing jobs such as air hostessing, ballet dancing and even racing drivering. Pretty good condition inside, small inscription and a couple of pen marks inside back cover but bindings sound. Covers are a little scuffed and corners bumped and top of spine is torn for about an inch at the top. Cover bindings starting to crack slightly. Old pencil pricing on inside cover (which is a little more than my start price but considerably less than some others listed)

Bartholomew's Quarter Inch Map of Scotland - 1932 Sheet 4 - Glasgow and Oban

Cloth mounted quarter inch motoring map of Scotland covering Glasgow and Oban and some of the Western Isles. It is numbered B 32 on the top left hand margin which dates it to the second half of 1932. Condition is generally good. A few small tears on the margins at the creases, no more than an inch long and the expected pinholes at some of the folds on the sheet corners. There's also a bit of mild foxing on the back of the cloth. Colours are very good - one pen marking - a name - on the reverse.

Petrol Ration Book 1101 - 1500cc - Complete and Unused 1956 or 73

CURRENTLY AT AUCTION.

Motor fuel was rationed briefly during the 1956 Suez crisis. Ration books were issued at that time but many remained unused and were issued again at the time of the 1973 oil crisis following the Yom Kippur war. Newer versions were also used, referring to the Minister of Technology rather than to the Minister of Power as the earlier ones did. This book is Serial Number MH4 174956 and is for a Motor Car between 1101 and 1500 cc.

Condition is good, no tears, staples still good.

Weight with packaging: 50g.
