Vintage Carved Wood Candlesticks

A pair of carved candlesticks that look to be ebony at first glance but is most probably stained as there is a nick to the base of one where a lighter wood shows through. Quite heavy and dense though and they ring when knocked together. They are carved with grazing deer or antelope around the stem and top and are possibly African. The bases aren't uniformly flat so they will need stabilising before a candle is inserted. Nice looking pair.

Hand Carved Wooden Plaque - Flower

Hand carved wooden relief of a flower, probably an amateur piece as it is signed on the back ESG 1988. Unfortunately one of the leaves has lost its tip but if you're confident enough and have the tools you may be able to disguise this. Still a nice piece with a certain rustic quality to it.

Tall Square Sectioned Hand Carved Hand Carved Wooden Lidded Box

SOLD

Tall sheesham wood box, handcarved in typical Indian style with a floral design on all four panels and the lid. Someone at some time has fitted a knob to the lid, a shame because it's not matching and a tiny bit off-centre, which nags my OCD side but otherwise it's in very good condition. Will hold something up to just under 16cm in length

Souvenir Tribal Art - Hand Carved Wooden Canoe

Splendid hand carved ornament featuring two chaps giving it their all rowing a canoe, although only one seems to have a paddle - this seems deliberate. I don't know where it originates from, it's has the look of maybe the Pacific area although it could be anywhere. A thoroughly charming piece though and in excellent condition.

Hand Carved Horn & Shell Souvenir Dolphin

Dolphin hand carved from horn and mounted on a beautiful magpie shell (cittarium pica), a native of the Caribbean, in turn bolt mounted onto a piece of horn. This is engraved with the name of a large Caribbean island I'm not allowed to name so presumably it's a souvenir. A beautiful item.

Small Hand Carved Wooden Dolphin Ornament

Small ornamental hand carved wooden dolphin. It's in a lightweight light coloured wood and while it does have a few small marks and what look to be splash marks it's in overall very good condition. The contrast in the pictures has been tweaked a bit to highlight the marks which are not as pronounced in normal light.

Hand Carved Bird Handled Scoop

SOLD

Large bowled spoon or scoop with a bird as the handle. It looks to be carved from horn although I can make no guarantees on this as there are some very convincing plastics. It is though hand finished, the legs being done with a fretsaw or similar and and the detail on the wings and feathers being engraved. A little bit of wear but in very good condition otherwise.

Hand Carved Wooden Elephant

SOLD

Small wooden elephant ornament, hand carved from a black wood that may or may not be ebony. Indeed, it may even be stained, I haven't dug into it to find out although there is a grain crack across its left flank that looks to be uniformly coloured. Sorry to flap, I'm no good on woods, let alone exotic ones so can only describe as best I can. Unusually it still has its fake ivory tusks so a rare complete ornament! In excellent condition.

Pair of Mounted Hand Carved Wooden Birds

SOLD

Unusual ornament, a pair of handacrved wooden birds mounted on a piece of worn driftwood or bogwood. They are of an indeterminate species carved from unidentified wood, although it's very light. The birds are mounted on a small piece of dowl, itself mounted in the base. They can be positioned and removed (I will remove them and wrap them separately for dispatch). There is what appears to be a small water stain on one tail fan but otherwise they are in very good condition.

Log: 4cm x 17cm
Birds approx: 12cm beak to tail, 5cm wingspan

Large Hand Carved Wooden Waterfowl

SOLD

Very nice handcarved wooden water bird; I'm not sure of the species - it seems a bit of a mixture. Quite heavy, stained reddish brown it's quite primitive in style yet still an accomplished piece. Felt pads on the base and nice ornament in great condition.  20cm x 16cm x 8cm

Handcarved Wooden Tortoise Within a Tortoise Ornament

SOLD

Small hand carved wooden tortoise or turtle. The shell has been carved into a kind of lattice and if you look closely there's a pair of eyes inside and a very rough looking baby tortoise! I'm not entirely convinced but it would certainly fit with similar ornaments of this style. Leaf design on the underside.

Hand Made East African Bao or Mancala Game

SOLD

This is a small hand made version of the traditional East African mancala type game of "bao". It is four rows of eight pits with 64 "seeds". It is made from a heavy wood that has, I think, been stained black to resemble ebony (there is a little knock to one end through which a much lighter wood is showing). The two sides are hinged together and each is carved with a stylised elephant and trees. It has a pleasing rustic feel while no doubt having been made for the souvenir trade. There should be 64 seeds although there are only 45 present here. I dare say some spares would not be hard to come by. There are also no rules but a quick search of the internet reveals there are several forms of the game and a set of rules shouldn't be too hard to come by.  Overall general condition is very good and it's a nice piece to sit on the sideboard.

Tribal Souvenir Art - Carved Wooden Serving Spoons

Rather nice pair of serving or salad spoons, hand carved from what looks to be a very dark wood ironwood, which may be ebony although it doesn't quite seem black enough; it is certainly very hard. The handles feature a nicely rendered grazing antelope or similar. Lovely items, in excellent condition.

Hand Carved Wooden Beaver

SOLD

Unusual but beautifully rendered beaver, hand carved from red cedar. Marvellous use of grain to emphasise the form and additionally the grain has not been smoothed so it's actually very tactile, rough when rubbed one way, smooth the other. Very nice detailed paws and other features.  There is a maker's name but it's partly obscured by an ancient piece of sticky tape. It's possibly "Carv... Co". There is also a scratched in "Nikk" who I take to be the artist. It's in excellent condition.

Large Carved Banana Leaf Shaped Wooden Platter

Long banana leaf shaped platter with indents for thumbs. Hand carved with notches and ovals. Very retro and quite distinctive. A couple of little knocks and some label residue on the bottom but in very good condition otherwise.

Pair of Hand Carved Sitting Cats

A pair of small, faintly oriental looking sitting cats, hand carved from wood. They are mirror opposites so would be good at either end of a shelf or mantel. Or they'd be good anywhere just because they are actually rather nice. One has a few very small paint dots on but these will remove (I've already got most off) but otherwise they are fine.
