Small,
playing card sized, booklet of Selected Patience Games by Lawrence H.
Dawson, dating from 1933 and published by W.D. & H.O. Wills, the
tobacco company. In the early 1930s the large tobacco companies were
enticing new customers by giving away free stuff. Wills had recently
acquired the playing card manufacturer Mardon, Son and Hall (the
printers of this booklet) and they developed the "Wills Scheme" giving
away packs of cards if you collected enough in pack token cards. This
booklet was produced as part of the scheme and Mardon's owed its
survival in the 1930's depression to this scheme. It contains the rules
of 25 different patience games
involving one or two packs. It's gold
edged, the covers are in extremely good condition with hardly any wear
and the stitched
binding is very sound. It has been hidden away in a box for many years
and judging by the condition has rarely, if ever, been used.
